About us
Duane and Tracie Lambeth stumbled into the wine business really by accident. Growing up in the Napa Valley, we call these accidents fate. We learned by planting a vineyard on our estate would could reduce our estate taxes. After purchasing an additional property and extensive soil tests it was determined that growing Cabernet was best suited for our location.
So Voila the Back Door label was born! But, as anyone who knows Duane, what was supposed to be a simple backyard project became much more. Even down to the choice of root stalk, and type of clones. Which by the way, is the same stalk used for some of Napa Valley's famed Cult Wines (not to mention any names, haha) and since then we have loved and nurtured our wine. It is truly a passion we love to share.
About our Name
The name "Back Door Cellars" pays to tribute to the resilience of prohibition America. Despite intense efforts to restrict the production, distribution and consumption of alcohol from 1920 - 1933, many Americans, weary from post WWI and the Great Depression, imbibed in their favorite libations in local Speakeasy Clubs. In order to gain access to these exclusive clubs, one often entered through the"back door" after muttering the password.
